League of Ireland
Barack Obama, Queen Elizabeth and Stephen Fry 0 Shamrock Rovers 1
At the Irish Film and Television Awards last night, Shamrock Rovers scooped 'Moment of the Year', beating some fairly big names.
At the annual shindig for the great and good of the Irish film and telly business they handed out loads of awards but those of us from a sporting persuasion were only interested in one prize, the ‘Moment of the Year’.
Four of the 10 nominees were sporting, with Rory McIlroy winning the US Open, Ireland’s defeat of Australia in the rugby, Republic of Ireland’s win against Estonia and Pat Sullivan’s stunner that put Shamock Rovers into the Europa League group stages the fourth and final one.
Quite how Stephen Cluxton’s All-Ireland winning free didn’t make the cut ahead of, let’s say, an Irish fella winning a job on Glee, is anyone’s guess but there you go.
Anyway, while we wanted Sullivan’s moment of magic we didn’t think it would really beat the speeches made by Barack Obama and Queen Elizabeth II back n May or our own Michael D Higgins first speech in his new gig. Stephen Fry's cameo in Ros Na Rún also had us worried.
But the people of Ireland, or more likely Tallaght, spoke and Pat Sullivan, and Setanta Sports, took the gong. Congratulations to all and any excuse to watch this goal again is fine with us.
