The rumour did the rounds earlier this week but after a tweet today, is Steve Staunton about to be named the new manager of his hometown club Dundalk?

Sadly it seems not. It was widely speculated earlier this week that Stan was about to take up the reins at the League of Ireland club. It was denied by the club on Tuesday but then today that speculation was further fuelled when photo agency Sportsfile tweeted the following.

Sadly, they left the rather crucial words ‘Under 19’ out of the tweet as we understand that Sean McCaffrey is to take over at the Lilywhites.

Still, the tweet is sure to have a caused a flurry of activity around some newsrooms on a quiet day.

And it seems that Stan will remain as a scout for Sunderland.
