Mick McCarthy says he'd be "crackers" to sell Kevin Doyle
Despite just two goals from 21 appearances in all competitions this season, Wolves manager Mick McCarthy has insisted that he would be "crackers" to offload Irish striker Kevin Doyle.
The 28-year-old has been the subject of two enquiries last week from both Sunderland and Everton, though McCarthy has said that he will stick by his man during Doyle's current poor run of form.
“Doyle’s not going anywhere," said McCarthy. "He wasn’t at any stage but certainly not 48 hours before the transfer deadline. I’d be crackers to sell him.”
“He was our No1 striker, our talisman. It can affect a player when he’s suddenly not that any more. But Fletcher has come along and been top dog, scoring his goals and playing well. Doyle had played so much football, up front on his own, then injured a knee on international duty and it just took its toll.
“Wayne Rooney had a dip in form, had knocks and niggles; Robin van Persie went out and came back and now he is flying again. It just happens and you have to get over it.
Continuing his salted biscuit analogy, the former Irish manager has once again said: "I would be crackers to let him go and I'm certainly not crackers." Although if he keeps talking about crackers, we'll begin to have our suspicions...
