Shane Long has now played twice and scored twice for new club West Bromwich Albion, against the champions of the last two years. But so far the Baggies have nothing to show for it.
Long’s scuffler exposed Manchester United’s dodgy keeper David De Gea last weekend but the champions took all three points by virtue of Ashley Young’s late double-deflected shot.
The Tipperary lad offered more evidence of his quality at Stamford Bridge today as he capitalised on a mistake from Alex, then shrugged off the Brazilian defender to slot past Hilario for the opening goal after four minutes.
An upset was on the cards until after the break but Nicolas Anelka levelled and Florent Malouda struck the winner in the 83rd minute.
To our biased eyes, though, the important moment was Long’s latest Premier League goal, another timely strike with the Euro 2012 qualifiers against Slovakia and Russia just two weeks away.
