JOE’s transfer wrap-up: Chelsea circle Manchester United contract rebel
Chelsea attempts to reinvigorate their aging squad could involve a cheeky £3m for Manchester United contract rebel Paul Pogba. Elsewhere, this Tevez transfer saga looks set to go on and on…
We begin today’s wrap up with the latest on Chelsea’s ongoing attempt to replace their tired side and win something with kids. Having had a bid for Shakhtar Donetsk’s 23-year-old attacking midfielder Willian rejected earlier this week, the Blues have set their sights on two potential replacements instead.
According to the Daily Mirror, Andre Villas-Boas has joined the growing queue for Manchester United youngster Paul Pogba, affectionately referred to as ‘The Pog’ by the club’s fans. Like the Red Devils’ fellow contract rebel Ravel Morrison, Pogba is now in the final six months of his contract and could join a new club for as little as £3 million this month.
Despite tentative enquiries from both Manchester City and Arsenal over a summer move, Chelsea are apparently keen to steal a march on their rivals and sign The Pog this month instead.
Considering that the 18-year-old French midfielder’s chances of making a Premier League debut have been further by the return of Paul Scholes, we wouldn’t be surprised to see Pogba lose patience sooner rather than later.
On the other hand, The Guardian believes that Chelsea will cast away the shackles of Financial Fair Play and splash out on Brazil midfielder Lucas (no, not that one – a new one).
The 19-year-old Sao Paolo midfielder already has 10 caps at Brazil but like his international Neymar, the booming Brazilian economy means that his club can name their price. If Chelsea won’t meet Shakhtar’s €30 million price for Willian, we can only imagine their reaction to Lucas’ release clause, believed to be worth €80 million.
Tevez and Hazard tempted by PSG ‘project’ (money)
What kind of transfer column would this be if we didn’t have any PSG rumours every single day? Today we discovered that although highly rated winger Eden Hazard had originally claimed that he would never leave Lille for a rival Ligue 1 club, the appointment of Carlo Ancelloti has turned the Belgian’s head.
“Of course, the interest from Paris is tempting. Paris Saint-Germain are a great club,” he told Le Parisien. “And especially with a coach like [Carlo] Ancelotti, that makes you even more keen.”
In news that fulfilled both our Tevez and PSG quota of rumours, the unprofessional footballer’s ‘advisor’ Kim Joorabchian today doomed football fans to another six months of Carlos Tevez transfer speculation by stating that he believes that his client will stay at Manchester City for this transfer window and join PSG this summer.
“If Carlos doesn’t leave Manchester City this winter, we will not rule out the possibility that he joins PSG in the summer. That’s definitely an option if he doesn’t sign for Inter or AC Milan,” Joorabchian told L’Equipe.
“Carlos believes in PSG’s project. He’s held talks with Carlo Ancelotti, who is one of the best coaches in the world. He’s also spoken with Leonardo, who really appreciates him.”
Finally, in actual transfer news, Sevilla’s Martin Caceres has joined Serie A leaders Juventus on a season-long loan, with an option to buy the Uruguayan international for €10 million. Now if only the Premier League transfer window would get a move on too…
