On the day he announced his plans to call it a day at the end of the season, we revisit some of Jamie Carragher’s best career moments.

One to watch – 1996

Carragher himself might not have thought he would go on to have such a distinguished career at that point, but somebody at Liverpool obviously had faith in the local lad as he was the subject of a ‘One to Watch’ feature in the year before he made his first-team debut.

What we learned from watching the video below is that Carragher was once a deadly predator around the edge of the box and that his Scouse accent was even stronger then than it is now, impossible as that might sound.

His first ever Liverpool goal

When he scored his first ever Premier League goal on his first Premier League start against Aston Villa with a powerful header in front of the Kop in 1998, Carragher probably thought that it was the first of many he would score in the red jersey. It didn't quite turn out like that, but he still went on to have a great career.

Carra scores a penalty for his boyhood heroes

As a Toffees fan growing up, Carragher no doubt dreamed of scoring against Liverpool at Anfield, but he never would have imagined the circumstances in which that dream would eventually materialise.

Playing in his own testimonial at Anfield a couple of years back and not long after scoring a spot-kick at the right end, Carra stepped in ahead of Yakubu after Everton were awarded a penalty and struck the ball past Brad Jones and into his own net, something the defender proved to be quite good at over the years.

Carragher hasn’t yet revealed his post-career plans, but for a man who is a self-confessed football fanatic, we would be surprised if he doesn’t end up staying involved in the game in some capacity, whether it is as a coach or as some have already suggested, as Liverpool’s eventual manager.

As a dedicated student of the game, Carragher might also follow in the footsteps of Gary Neville – not that he’d ever admit that, mind – and go down the punditry route, having already shown a flavour for it in an appearance on Soccer Saturday in 2011.

Jeff Stelling and the boys certainly seemed to enjoy his company and Phil Thompson would no doubt relish having someone with similar sympathies around for Liverpool’s highs and lows throughout the season.

Sticking it to Sky’s Andy Burton after the Carling Cup Final

One of Carragher’s most admirable qualities is his honesty and although it was just after Liverpool had won a trophy, he wasn’t afraid to pounce on Andy Burton after the Sky Sports reporter suggested that it was the beginning of the end after the Carling Cup Final last year.

It was a brilliant rebuke and we doubt Burton took too kindly to being reminded of all that unpleasantness surrounding his role in the infamous Andy Gray, Richard Keys and Sian Massey affair.
