Video: Easily the worst own goal of the season so far
Only a few weeks have gone in the various leagues throughout Europe but it’ll take a whopper of an own goal to beat this one as the best/worst own goal of the season.
One own goal in a game is rare enough – apart from any game involving Man United the season before last – two is even rarer, but it is only once in a lifetime that every single goal scored in a single same comes courtesy of a player putting the ball into his own net.
That’s what happened in the meeting of Panionios and OFI Kreta in the Greek League at the weekend, when all three goals were officially credited as own goals. Are we the only ones that small another betting scandal?
While own goals by their very nature tend to be pretty terrible affairs, there are few as bad as the first goal scored in this particular game, scored by OFI’s Mirnes Sisic.
Sisic greeted a Panionios corner with what would be termed in these parts as an agricultural clearance, but he sent the ball spiralling so high skywards that it confused everyone in the box, including the Panionios ‘keeper, who couldn’t handle it when it eventually came back to earth about 30 seconds after it left Sisic’s boot.
Try as we might to describe it, you really need to see it yourself to believe it, so have a look in the video above and gasp/laugh as we did on our first viewing.
Hat-tip to 101 Great Goals for the video.
