Former Arsenal player Emmanuel Eboue, now of Galatasaray, was at the receiving end of some horrific abuse from Besiktas supporters at the weekend.
Turkish fans have something of an unwanted reputation for creating a hostile atmosphere and although Eboue would have been well aware of it prior to his move east in the summer, he probably didn’t think it would be this bad.
The Ivory Coast native is a somewhat erratic character and can often drive supporters demented with his behaviour on the pitch, but nothing warranted the abuse that was meted out to him during the 0-0 draw with Besiktas.
The former Gunner was hit with a number of items from Besiktas supporters including a water bottle and some lighters and he appealed frantically for the officials for help as projectiles rained down on him from the sidelines as he attempted to take a throw-in.
Although there has been nothing to suggest that there were racial motivations behind the attacks of the Besiktas fans, it is a conclusion that many have come to at a time when the issue is extremely prevalent in football at the moment considering the investigations into John Terry and Luis Suarez and the typically barmy and ill-advised comments on the subject from FIFA head clown Sepp Blatter.
You can see for yourself what Eboue had to put up with in the video above, complete with the rather haunting background track that seems to encapsulate his plight.
