Eamon Dunphy and John Giles were on the couch with Miriam O’Callaghan last night and although they weren’t as drunk as their last appearance on the show, there were still a few good yarns told.

Many of you will remember a previous appearance on the show along with Liam Brady and Bill O’Herlihy during the last European Championships when hilarity ensued as Dunphy in particular was clearly the worse for wear.

Liam and Bill weren’t in attendance last night, but Eamon and John still had a few good stories to tell, including one about how Giles ended Dunphy’s international career while he was in charge of the national side.

Needing only two caps to reach 25 appearances and receive a much-coveted statuette, Dunphy was selected to tour South America and was sure that his buddy Giles would give him the caps needed to reach the milestone.

Instead, however, Eamon was left out of all three games and never won another international cap for Ireland, jokingly blaming Giles for the end of his time with Ireland.

Giles, on the other hand, reckons that a combination of factors, including his own return, the form of Eoin Hand and a controversial interview given by Eamon to Sam Smyth about Ireland playing in Chile were the reasons for his international demise.

An old story perhaps, but it was one that we had never previously heard and makes for a good listen.

Check it out for yourself in the video above.
