Wouldn’t you know it, James McClean has gone and showed Trap what he is missing with yet another goal for Sunderland, this time against Arsenal.
Just yesterday, the Derry man failed to make Trap’s 24-man squad for the friendly with Czech Republic on February 29, with the Italian hinting that he would be only brought in after the Euros.
That is despite his sensational form for Sunderland and his recent clearance to switch from Northern Ireland to the Republic’s cause.
Anyway, with the far from mighty Arsenal coming to the Stadium of Light today we should have known McClean would hit the target again and sure enough he did. The Gunners’ German centre-half Per Mertesacker gets himself in an awful mess and the Irish winger nicks the ball off him and slams the ball home from a tight angle.
Watch it for yourself above and weep big salty tears knowing that he could score in every game from now until June and he is still unlikely to get a call from Trap.
In the end Sunderland lost 2-1 to a late Thierry Henry goal, adding yet more misery for us hard-pressed Irish fans.
