Robbie Keane achieved his lifelong ambition of setting up the winning goal in the MLS Cup Final as LA Galaxy defeated Houston Dynamo last night.
The Ireland captain was obviously not feeling the effects of celebrating Ireland’s Euro 2012 qualification and subsequent long trek across the Atlantic earlier this week as he played a key part in the only goal of the game after 71 minutes.
Keane collected a flick on from David Beckham, cut inside from the left wing and played an incisive through ball into the path of Landon Donovan, who flicked it over the onrushing ‘keeper into the far corner.
Galaxy certainly got their money’s worth with all three marquee players involved in the winning goal, or as the American commentator put it, “all expenses paid right there”.
Robbie told US reporters before the game that he had celebrated Ireland’s European qualification with “orange juice” on Tuesday night, but neglected to mention whether or not it was laced with a spirit of any kind.
He would have had no such worries about laying off the gargle when he hit the Viper Room or some other LA hostelry to celebrate last night, as with the MLS season over and done with and the Irish captain already stating he has no desire for a loan move to Europe during the off-season, he can put the feet up until March.
Well played, sir.
