It was all white on the night for James McClean as he fought his way through the snow to score the only goal in Sunderland’s 1-0 win over Stoke today.
The game was played in dreadful conditions but Sunderland always looked the most likely to get a goal, especially once Robert Huth saw red for the home side.
In the end it was settled by McClean who managed to keep his footing, beat Ryan Shawcross and score with his right, in the latest reminder to the footballing world that we could have a real star on our hands. We can only hope Trap was watching.
The game was also notable for the sight of David Meyler starting and playing 85 minutes, great news after such a miserable time with injuries.
It was good day for Irish goals all-round as Anthony Pilkington, a rival with McClean for a possible slot in Trap’s team, got on the scoresheet for Norwich against Bolton.
But the best news was seeing Kevin Doyle back on the scoresheet for the first time since October 22 last year with the winner in Wolves’ 2-1 win over QPR.
