Video: The good and the bad of Martin Skrtel

Liverpool 2-2 Manchester City

Cracking game this afternoon at Anfield, where Martin Skrtel wielded a huge influence at both ends of the pitch.

The big defender put the Reds in front with a bullet of a header from Steven Gerrard’s corner before the break, just rewards for the hosts after an impressive first half display against the Champions.

Yaya Toure equalised for Citeh just after the hour when he took advantage of confusion in the Liverpool defence to knock home a cross from Carlos Tevez, but Brendan Rodgers’ men retained the lead thanks to a lovely free-kick from Luis Suarez shortly after.

It looked like it might be enough to claim what would have been a deserved victory for Liverpool, but with ten minutes left on the clock, Skrtel passed the ball into no man’s land, allowing Tevez to round Reina and slot to the net for City’s second and the last goal of the game.

Liverpool fans will take heart from the display and the performance of man of the match Joe Allen and youngster Raheem Sterling in particular, while like last season, Roberto Mancini will be glad to emerge from a difficult away trip with something to show for his side’s efforts.

Martin Skrtel, meanwhile, will reflect on a somewhat mixed day at the office.
