It is now 10 years since their best GAA day but there’s much more to Laois than that one day in 2003.
GAA moment: The 2003 Leinster Final
After years of quality underage sides the senior side finally delivered a Leinster title following a gap of 57 years. Wexford, Offaly, Dublin and finally Kildare all fell as Mick O’Dwyer inspired his team to new heights. In front of over 81,000 at Croke Park goals by Beano McDonald and Ross Munnelly brought the Delaney Cup back to Laois.
Laois would lose the 2004 and 2005 Leinster finals and the team faded as contenders but that day was special for all Laois folk. Here’s captain Ian Fitzgerald lifting the cup in the Hogan Stand after the game.
The Rock of Dunamase
Located between Portlaoise and Stradbally the Rock has been used as a defensive stronghold for centuries. Excavations suggest it was first used in the 9th Century and the site is steeped in Irish history from Viking times up to the Middle Ages.
Now there is a ruined castle on the site and the views from the top are still as breathtaking as ever. Well worth a diversion off the N80.
Electric Picnic
Now in its 10th year, the Electric Picnic is not yet confirmed for 2013 but we’re pretty sure it will happen. First staged in Stradbally Hall in 2004 the music Festival soon gained a reputation as one fo the best in Europe. Great facilities, great music and a great atmosphere makes it a must visit at least once in your life.
Usually held in late August/early September we will see you down there if, though more likely when, the 2013 event takes place.
