We asked Bernard Brogan to pick a Five-A-Side of current Dublin players ahead of the Red Bull Cúl5 tournament. Here's who he went for...
When we spoke to him earlier in the week Bernard Brogan told us Red Bull Cúl5 in Dublin Port on May 25 is “going to be about speed. The ball doesn’t go out of play it bounces off the walls so it’s all about quick football, quick movement, one touch and using the guys around you.”
So it’s no surprise that his Cúl5 dream team is made up of some the best attacking players in the Dublin squad today, including himself.
Stephen Cluxton
The Dublin captain Cluxton is renowned for redefining what a goalkeeper contributes, his pinpoint kick outs and free kicks, including that one to win the 2011 All Ireland, are a cornerstone of Dublin’s recent success.
Position: Goalkeeper
Club: Parnells
Bernard says: “Clucko, need I explain?”
Paul Flynn
The man they call Flinto has been a revelation since making his debut for Dublin in 2011, helping them to the All Ireland and proving a vital cog in the half-forward line, a fact verified by his two All Stars.
Position: Right-half forward
Club: Fingallians
Bernard says: “Energiser bunny, he never stops running and is like a brick wall as well, good for defending a small pitch.”
Diarmud Connolly
An all-action player who not only has a fantastic work rate but a skillset that is the envy of most other forwards, Connolly can create space and shoot from all angles.
Position: Left-half forward
Club: St Vincent’s
Bernard says: “Probably the most naturally talented footballer I have ever seen, extremely both footed and deadly accurate.”
Kevin McManamon
Under 20 minutes of gametime sealed McManamon’s place in Dublin history as he came on as a substitute, slotted away a goal and won the free which Cluxton knocked over for the victory.
Position: Full-forward
Club: St Jude's
Bernard says: “He is like a juggernaut running with the ball and a goal machine that is near impossible to stop.”
Bernard Brogan
For many, Brogan is Dublin football - his creativity, dedication and love of the sport shine through in his performances and will see him join his father in the Capital’s hall of fame.
Club: St Oliver Plunketts
Position: Corner forward
Bernard says: “By default, as it’s my team I can pick myself.”
The Red Bull Cúl5 takes place in Dublin Port on May 25th and is open to anyone eligible to play Minor level football in 2013.
