The Cavan County Board believe the Seanie Johnston transfer saga is over, and they want him to play again for Cavan Gaels.
We’ve often compared the ‘Seanie Johnston to Kildare’ transfer saga with the Carlos Tevez drama as both cases involved players trying to engineer transfers in slightly unorthodox fashions. The Tevez affair finished up last week and it looks like the Johnston one is over too.
Last week it was confirmed that the Breffni forward would not appeal the decision by the CCCC to turn down his transfer request from Cavan Gaels to a club in Kildare, meaning no move in the short term anyway.
The 27-year-old forward was frozen out of the Cavan senior team last year and wished to resume his inter-county career with Kildare but the powers that be in Croke Park were not satisfied that Johnston was based in Straffan for long enough to merit a transfer.
Following on from Johnston’s decision not to go to the Disputes Resolution Authority, Cavan County Board now expect Johnston to return to the Cava Gaels line-up.
Cavan PRO Declan Woods said in the Irish Examiner: "We’d hope that Seanie comes back and plays with his club and look forward to seeing him there. That’s where his talent has been nurtured and where he started. Cavan Gaels are the best club in the county and certainly the most successful club. They want to move forward in Ulster and Seanie would certainly help them to succeed at provincial level."
Woods also revealed that the Breffni lads were always confident that the proposed switch would never happen.
"We didn’t expect that this would end any other way," said Woods. "From the sound bites that we got, including from the media, the word was this wasn’t going to go through. It’s a non-story for us now. Nobody is talking about it."
So, is that really it? If so it was slightly shorter than the Tevez saga but not by much. Kieran McGeeney is not a man to take things like this lying down so we won’t close the book on this just yet, though.
