Before all Cavan people get offended, that last bit in the headline was just a joke. But there’s no joke about the invite sent to US President Barack Obama for the Ulster quarter-final next month.
Following yesterday’s brilliant victory over Armagh in the Ulster Championship Preliminary Round, there is plenty of excitement about the Cavan football team at the moment.
On the back of three Ulster under-21 titles on the trot, with plenty of talent in the squad and a position in the kinder half of the Ulster Championship draw, there is a buzz about what the team might achieve this season and, first and foremost, about their Ulster quarter-final against Fermanagh next month.
Cavan fans will flock to Brewster Park in their droves for that game, but there will be an even greater demand for tickets if the most powerful man in the world responds to an invitation sent his way by a dedicated Cavan supporter in the aftermath of yesterday’s win.
Barack Obama is due in the Lough Erne resort in Fermanagh for the G8 summit next month and as the Cavan v Fermanagh game will be taking place in Brewster Park around the same time, said Cavan supporter said he’d drop Barack a friendly e-mail to see if he fancied taking some time out of his hectic schedule to experience our native games for himself.
The fan in question is one Dean Arrowsmith, who, incidentally, was also part of the Back the Bid team who managed their blag their way to Euro 2012 last summer, so he obviously has a talent for this sort of thing. A transcript of the e-mail was sent our way on Facebook by his friend, JohnnyLoganbravo Smith, who assures us that he did indeed send it to the President of the United States. Who are we not to believe him?

We’ve included a screen grab of the e-mail above, but as it’s quite hard to read, we have included the transcript at the bottom of the page, in which Dean offers to bring Obama to the game and, quite amazingly for a Cavan man, even offers to buy him a ticket to the game and a pint of Guinness afterwards.
Is Obama about to become the most famous man at a GAA match in Brewster Park since Peter Darragh Quinn? Here’s hoping that thanks to Dean’s efforts, yes, yes he is.
Dear Mr President,
Firstly may I take the opportunity to thank you for taking the time to read my email.
I am aware that you are visiting county Fermanagh for the G8 summit around the middle of June. That same weekend, (June 16th), there is a big Gaelic Football match on between Fermanagh and my native Cavan in Brewster Park, Enniskillen. If you have time in your hectic schedule, I would like to invite you to attend the game with myself and a few friends, I will even pay in to the game for you (it's only €15), and let you experience the national game of our country for the first time! And after the game, we will buy you a pint of Guinness and discuss the trials and tribulations of what occured on the field! I know you probably wont want to offend your native Offaly folk but we will also give you a Cavan jersey as a momento for the occasion.
If you are interested let me know, would be great to meet you. I worked in Chicago in 2009 and 2011 as a soccer coach so it is only fitting that I invite you to come with us to the game. You may think this is a joke email, but I assure you, we would love for you to come cheer on the "Boys in Blue" with us.
Thank you again for taking the time to read this email and I look forward to your response.
