National League wrap-up: Galway star in Derry

05/02/2012 6:19 pm

The only game in the top flight today ended in stalemate, but Galway were the day’s most impressive performers.

Cork took the fight to Armagh at Morgan Athletic Grounds and led by five at the break, 1-3 to just a solitary point for a home side with five league debutants.

Bu the dismissal of Rebel goalscorer Paul Kerrigan, via a straight red, for a clash with Finnian Moriarty just at the break, turned matters back in favour of the Orchard County.

Malachy Mackin took control at midfield, while Eugene McVerry landed 0-4, and then Brian Mallon curled over a peach of a point to level the game and ensure the points were shared.

But Galway’s away performance in Division 2 was even more impressive. They travelled to Celtic Park and left with a fantastic four-point win, 1-11 to 1-15, a fine start to Alan Mulholland’s reign over the Tribe.

Shorn of Padraic Joyce and Michael Meehan Galway were still fluent and clinical. Young Milltown forward Michael Martin led the charge with 0-5 while defender Garreth Bradshaw grabbed their goal, the result of a wonderful flowing move by the visitors.

Also in Division 2 Louth got a flying start to their season with a 0-12 to 1-6 win over Westmeath, gaining the upper hand in what will be a fierce relegation battle in the second tier

Division 3 saw wins for Longford, Wexford and Roscommon, while Clare, Wicklow and Leitrim won in Division 4.
