There has been a bit of upheaval in Waterford hurling circles today but word on the street is that a former Deise hero may be riding to the rescue.
Let’s face it, it’s been a miserable season for Waterford hurling. Under new man Michael Ryan talismanic, if perhaps fading, star Eoin Kelly was dropped while their other scorer-in-chief John Mullane took a break.
Shorn of those talents, Waterford have lost three from three in Division 1 and they will be dead certs for the relegation play-off if they don’t beat Galway on Sunday. So, as if Ryan didn’t have enough to worry about this week, it has emerged that one of his selectors, Nicky Cashin, has stepped down today.
According to RTE, Cashin has cited a number of reasons for his decision, with an unknown dispute with the county board mentioned by the national broadcaster.
We don’t know if the return of Kelly and Mullane are linked to Cashin’s departure as some have speculated but informed sources are suggesting that the living legend that is Ken McGrath may be about to join the back-room team as a coach.
The return of Kelly and Mullane on the field, plus the sight of McGrath on the sideline, will certainly give the Deise fans a lift but is it going to be too little too late to prevent what looks like an almost certain relegation play-off game on the horizon?
And we thought when Davy left town things would go a bit quiet down in Waterford.
