Kilkenny under Brian Cody have been all-conquering and their success in the National League has helped swell the coffers by seven figures.
By Declan Whooley
Liam McCarthy has been a regular visitor to the Cats since Cody took over at the helm, but they have also displayed remarkable consistency in the league. Not only has it reinforced a winning mentality, it has seen the County Board coffers swell by almost €1 million. On Sunday it should surpass that magical number.
Winners of the competition in 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2009 and 2012 and twice runners-up under Cody’s watch, the Irish Independent reports that the Cats have banked €818,363 from their league exploits, plus winner’s grants from sponsors Allianz – currently at €15,000 - pushes the figure well past €900,000.
With home advantage of Nowlan Park on Sunday and other gate receipts to be factored in, Kilkenny are reaping the benefits off the pitch every bit as much as on it.
