O’Donnell calls it a day with the Rossies

Fergal O’Donnell has stepped down as manager of the Roscommon football team after three years in charge.

O’Donnell enjoyed a highly successful term in charge of the Westerners, guiding them to their first Connacht title in nine years in 2010 and bringing them to another Connacht decider again this year, when they were narrowly beaten by Mayo in Hyde Park.

O’Donnell was also in charge of the Roscommon minor team that won their first All-Ireland title since 1951 in 2006 and oversaw the transition of a number of that panel, such as Peter Domican and Donie Shine, onto the senior side.

The Roscommon County Board confirmed O’Donnell’s departure in a statement released last night which read: “Fergal O'Donnell has stepped down from his position as Manager of the Roscommon Senior Football Team following three years in charge.

“During his tenure Fergal led the team to the county's first Connacht Senior title in nine years by defeating Sligo in 2010 and made the team a competitive force again.

“The Board would like to extend its gratitude to Fergal and his Management team. Their hard work, dedication and level of professionalism was greatly appreciated by the Board, the players and supporters.”
