Pat Gilroy's big shoes have been filled

01/10/2012 8:46 pm

As expected, Jim Gavin has been appointed as the new manager of the Dublin footballers. Another Jim to win matches?

From the minute that Pat Gilroy stepped down after his very successful spell in charge of the Dublin footballers, only one name was seriously in the frame; Jim Gavin. And tonight the Dublin County Board confirmed his appointment.

The Round Towers man has managed the Dublin Under 21 team to two All-Irelands and he was, like Gilroy, a member of the winning 1995 senior team.

Back when Gilroy stepped down, we reported on the fact that Gavin's Wikipedia page referred to him as Big Jim Wavin. That has been erased from the page now, as befits a man in one of the plum jobs in the GAA world. All he needs to do now is win Sam back and get that added to the page.

The current panel were believed to support his elevation to the top job in Dublin GAA and past players such as Jason Sherlock have spoken about what a good appointment Gavin would be.

We wish him all the best as he has a hard act to follow.
