It’s not just the inter-county stars who sacrifice a lot for the GAA, look at the cruel conditions club players used to operate under in Mayo.
The lot of a GAA player is often not a happy one. Going from work straight to training on dark winter nights, early morning sessions is the boss is a real tough task master and, worst of all, restrictions on what you can eat and drink.
Many players go completely off the gargle for the duration of the season but it seems in the not too distant past the limits were a little more generous.
According to a piece by Ed McGreal in today’s Mayo News about the beginning of the club championship, not so long ago the players were limited to just the six pints on a Saturday night.

Harsh, eh?
We have spoken to a current player in the county's club system who assured us, under guaranteed anonymity, it is much stricter now, and you can have only four pints on a Saturday. We're pretty sure he was joking...
