Kilkenny football might be a byword for ‘useless’ but the county have no intention of quitting the big ball game.
In the last week we have seen Monaghan effectively shut up their hurling team while the Longford hurlers have also had difficulty in fielding a team of late. Cavan, as we know, gave up the small ball last year.
But the Kilkenny footballers, the much-maligned Kilkenny footballers, are not going anywhere.
Speaking in the Kilkenny People, Football Board Chairman Tom Brennan said: “We’re not going to walk away from the sport. There are plenty of people interested in Gaelic football in Kilkenny.”
We wonder about that but it is great to see someone so committed to not let the sport die in their county. The Cats finished bottom of Division 4 on Sunday, with no wins from eight games and an incredible tally of 3-25 scored and 26-195 conceded, a points difference of -239.
Brennan, is undeterred by those cold numbers. "The last few years have been difficult," he said. "It’s not easy when you’re losing games by big margins, but we’re not going to pull out."
The county, without a win in the League since 2008, don’t enter the senior championship but they will be in the minors this year. "League is one thing, but the championship is a different ball game," said Brennan.
We’re glad they’re sticking at it. Things can only get better.
