The Sunday Times says Galway have won 17 All-Ireland Hurling titles. That can't be right?
According to the Sunday Times today, Galway have won 13 more All-Ireland Hurling titles than they have officially been credited with. Did they take some off Kilkenny in the spirit of fair play?
In a graphic to explain the record of both sides in All-Ireland Finals today, the Sunday Times correctly stated that Kilkenny had garnered 33 All-Ireland Hurling titles, but Galway fans reading the paper probably raised an eyebrow at Galway’s winning figure of 17.

As far as we’re aware, the Tribesmen have only lifted the Liam McCarthy Cup on four occasions, in 1923 and on three occasions in the 1980s – 1980, 1987 and 1988. Unless there is a gap in the records somewhere we’re pretty sure that’s the official figure, although followers of the Tribesmen will be hoping that it’s five by 5.30 or so this afternoon.
This is all just a little bit of light-hearted fun at the Sunday Times’ expense of course. Apart from that little error, their coverage of today’s final is excellent and it was all just an innocent mistake.
Besides, we’re far from immune from mistakes in these parts, as will probably be pointed out by a few of our readers once they’ve finished this piece.
No Galway fans, you haven’t won 17 All-Ireland titles yet, but you’ll get there eventually.
Hat-tip to our own Sean Nolan and his eagle eyes for pointing this one out.
