He hasn’t started a Championship game since last year’s All Ireland final but Tipp’s Lar Corbett has been thrown the jersey for Sunday’s Munster Hurling final.

His retirement stunned the hurling world. His return not so much. But after a fine cameo display in their semi-final defeat over Cork, former Hurler of the Year Lar Corbett has been named in Declan Ryan’s starting XV for Sunday’s Munster final against Waterford.

The Thurles man is the only new face from the side that overcame Cork in the Munster semi-final. Corbett comes in for Gearoid Ryan, who is injured. It is Corbett’s first start since last year’s Al-Ireland final defeat to Kilkenny. Lar was probably the most famous water carrier in Ireland for the Premier’s quarter-final with Limerick and he was an influential sub in the Cork game, teeing up the decisive goal by Noel McGrath.

Now he gets to start and we’re sure that he is the last person that the Waterford defence want to see. In last year’s Munster final, the Thurles Sarsfields man landed 4-4 as the Deise took one hell of a beating, 7-19 to 0-19 to be precise.

Declan Ryan will be hoping that Lar can do similar damage at Pairc Ui Chaoimh this Sunday.

Eoin Kelly remains on the bench.

TIPPERARY (SH v Waterford): B Cummins; C O’Brien, P Curran, M Cahill; T Stapleton, C O’Mahony, P Maher; B Maher, S McGrath; P Bourke, P Maher, L Corbett; B O’Meara, J O’Brien, N McGrath.
