Video: In case you missed it, Eamon Dunphy compared Leo Messi to Henry Shefflin last night

If he was watching, it must have given him great pleasure to be mentioned in the same breath as one of the finest sportsmen ever seen. We’re not sure if they get RTE in Barcelona though...

And we’re sure if Henry Shefflin was watching on, he too would have been a bit taken aback when he was mentioned in the same sentence as the great Messi as Eamon Dunphy cast his analytical eye over Barca’s away-goal Champions League victory over PSG, secured with a 1-1 draw in the Nou Camp last night.

After a half-fit Messi came off the bench to turn the game on its head and inspire Pedro’s equaliser, the Argentinean was once again the centre of attention in the post-match discussion.

Suggesting that Barcelona have become slightly over-reliant on Messi’s greatness, Eamon said that Messi had a similar influence on the Catalan side as Shefflin had on the Kilkenny hurlers and waxed lyrical about the amount of times Shefflin has single-handedly turned things around for the Cats in big games at Croke Park.

Brian O’Driscoll also got an honourable mention and we were waiting for Eamon to give a roll call of the great Irish sportsmen who could be compared to Messi before Liam interrupted.

Hopefully Shefflin had the Sky box on record because along with the numerous Leinster and All-Ireland medals and All-Star awards, this is definitely something he’ll want to show the grandkids.
