It didn’t grab as much attention as the Fitzgibbon Cup, but the Padraig Mac Diarmada Final produced one of the best hurling blocks you’ll see all season by one of the finest named hurlers we’ve ever heard of.
Taking place before the Fitzgibbon Cup semi-finals in Carnmore in Galway last week, IT Blanchardstown and UU Coleraine/Magee played out a thrilling final in the Daily Mail Corn Padraig Mac Diarmada Final, which IT Blanchardstown edged on scoreline of 1-12 – 1-11.
There was no lack of commitment from players on either side, an attitude exemplified by the efforts of UU Coleraine/Magee corner-back Pearse Dallas, who put his body on the line to dive in and prevent a Blanchardstown forward from knocking over what looked like a handy point.
Dallas’ intervention was the first play in a move which eventually led to Ger Carberry firing over a point for UU Coleraine/Magee at the other end and as is evident from the reaction on the sideline, everyone was quick to pay tribute to Dallas for his efforts in initiating the score with his fierce commitment in defence.
Is there a higher compliment in GAA circles than ‘That’s your score boy’? If there is, we haven’t heard it.
Brilliant stuff.
