AFL legend Jim Stynes' funeral was held in Melbourne overnight. It was filled with sadness and a funny story about the International Rules.
Australia came to a standstill overnight as Jim Stynes' funeral ceremony took place in his adopted city of Melbourne. The farewell to the Dubliner was broadcast live in the city square, a testimony to how Stynes was regarded in Australia.
Stynes’ wife Sam spoke of how she hoped it was all a bad dream while is brother, Dublin GAA star Brian, spoke emotionally of his loss.
And there was some fun too as his former team-mate Garry Lyon spoke of how Stynes had accidentally been able to listen in to the Irish coaches during one of the International Rules Series, and continued to do so throughout the game, despite Lyon telling him he shouldn’t.
Stynes’ ashes will be spread in Ireland but he will be remembered in Australia for a very long time to come.
