Wedding or All-Ireland final? Coolderry captain forced to choose
The highlight of the club hurling year tomorrow has forced Coolderry captain Brendan O’Meara to cancel his wedding, scheduled for today.
Watching Don’t Tell The Bride has taught us any number of things. Mainly it’s taught me that I should really avoid RTE2. But it has also shown us that weddings are big deals, for both parties, and you mess with them at your peril. It has also shown us how bloody expensive the whole fandango is.
So hats off then to Coolderry captain Brendan O’Meara and his soon to be wife Jessica. Tomorrow, Offaly champions Coolderry will play Loughgiel Shamrocks of Antrim in the All-Ireland Senior club hurling final. It’s the one day that club hurling really takes the spotlight and it’s a credit to the GAA that St Patrick’s Day is now synonymous with the football and hurling club finals.
But Brendan and Jessica had a small problem; their wedding was scheduled for March 16. Today. And getting hitched isn’t exactly ideal preparation before the biggest game of your life. So, the whole thing was postponed.
“I booked that date [March 16] a year ago or more but it’s a great situation to be in, to be honest,” said Brendan in today’s Irish Examiner. “If someone told me that a year ago [that he’d be in this position] I’d have been delighted. We had to change the date of the wedding.”
As for Jessica’s thoughts on the subject? “She enjoys her hurling as well and has a big part in it — we’re happy with it now.”
That ‘now’ worries us a bit but with Coolderry’s place in the final only confirmed on February 11 after they defeated Gort in a thrilling semi-final, we can imagine that there were a lot of headaches involved in delaying the juggernaut that is an Irish wedding that late.
Anyway, the big day has now been put back to April 13, a Friday, so Brendan and Jessica are obviously not superstitious. For their sake, let’s hope an All-Ireland medal is sitting at the top table with them.
