The team is made up entirely from the four All-Ireland semi-finalists, with All-Ireland Champions Kerry leading the way with five representatives.

Paul Murphy, Peter Crowley, David Moran, Kieran Donaghy and James O’Donoghue have all been acknowledged for their role in bringing Sam back to the Kingdom for the first time in five years, with four players from Donegal also getting selected and three apiece from defeated semi-finalists Mayo and Dublin.

Goalkeeper Paul Durcan, Footballer of the Year nominee Neil McGee, midfielder Neil Gallagher and Donegal captain Michael Murphy have all picked up an award, while Mayo are represented by Keith Higgins, Colm Boyle and Cillian O’Connor and Dublin by James McCarthy, Paul Flynn and Diarmuid Connolly.

There aren’t many major surprises in the overall selection, although there might be debate over the exclusion of the likes of Aidan O’Mahony, Frank McGlynn, Ryan McHugh and Donnchadh Walsh in the final XV.

Six players – Paul Murphy, James McCarthy, Peter Crowley, David Moran, Diarmuid Connolly and Cillian O’Connor – will receive their first awards at the ceremony on Friday night, where the hurling All-Star selection will be named live on RTE and the Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year winners in both codes will be revealed.
