Meath’s Kevin Reilly and Armagh’s Aaron Kernan are the biggest casualties on a big weekend in the football championship where there’s a big ‘un in Ulster and an appetising double header in Croke Park.
Reilly’s failure to recover from an Achilles injury is a big blow for the Royals as he would have been handed the task of looking after the big and brutish Kildare full forward Tomas O’Connor, who looked impressive against Offaly the first day out. Instead, that job will go to Bryan Menton, with Ciaran Lenehan, the man who offered Becks a chance to help him with the silage later in the summer only yesterday, drafted in at full back.
Aaron Kernan, meanwhile, will be the only man absent from the Armagh team that lost narrowly to Tyrone, with Paul Duffy coming into replace the injured Crossmaglen man for the first round qualifier with Roscommon on Sunday afternoon.
Speaking of Tyrone, Mickey Harte has kept faith with the same XV that defeated the Orchard County for what could be a titanic battle with Donegal with Ulster and Jim McGuinness has done likewise and will have Rory Kavanagh ready in reserve if required.
Elsewhere, captain David Murphy, Ciaran Lyng and Paddy Byrne come into a Wexford side with the ominous task of trying to topple the Dubs at HQ on Sunday, while the Limerick and Wexford hurlers have named unchanged sides for their qualifier clashes against Antrim and Carlow respectively.
