The biggest game of the weekend was not as close as we expected, and this goal was the pick of a fine display by the All-Ireland champs.
We were torn in this week’s selection. You could argue that the second Donegal goal, scored by Ross Wherity after a stunning run by Paddy McBrearty, was more important. It put Tyrone three behind with 20 minutes to go and the Red Hands looked unable to recover from that point.
But the first Donegal goal was even better. The spot by Michael Murphy of the space in behind the Tyrone defence was good but the ability to find it from such a distance was even better.
But even with that, there was lots of work to do. McBrearty, as he was all game, was superb under the high ball and flicked it on perfectly to Colm McFadden, putting the big man in on goal.
But with the defence pushing the forward onto his weaker right side it was a difficult chance and he still tucked it home past Niall Morgan in the Tyrone goal.
For all the talk about their defensive solidity, that ability to hit you hard in attack at lightning speed might be the biggest asset Jim McGuinness’ side has.
