We’ve heard a lot of talk about the Hawkeye system in this year’s Championship, so here’s how it will come into play when the serious business starts.
GAA officials gave a more thorough explanation of how the system will work later this summer at headquarters today and if you want a greater idea with all the nuts and bolts attached, you can get it right here.
While an explanation is all well and good, the ordinary fan on the street wants to see a visual explanation of how it will play out and wants an idea of what’s going to get them out of their seats when a shot sails close to the posts and creates the sort of atmosphere you see with the use of a similar system in Wimbledon, for example.
The GAA used a brilliant point by Cork’s Ciaran Sheehan in last year’s All-Ireland semi-final defeat to Donegal to demonstrate how the system will work once the umpire and referee use the ‘box’ signal to indicate that there is an element of confusion about whether the ball went over the bar or not.

On first impressions, it looks like a reliable and accurate way of determining controversial scores and wides but if we’re being honest, the best part of all this is the anticipation of the traditional GAA umpire having to make the ‘box’ signal and the inevitable devilment that it will prompt amongst some mischievous fans nearby.
