If you thought that growing older was no fun, think again. A new study published today shows that the elderly are having a bit TOO much fun, if you get what we mean. Nudge, nudge. Wink, wink.

The Irish Times reports today that sexually transmitted diseases in the 50-90 age bracket has doubled over the past decade.

According to a new study published today in the British Medical Journal cases of syphilis, chlamydia and gonorrhoea in this specific age group rose sharply during the 2000s. While doctors have their suspicions, there is little evidence to explain why this mini-epidemic is taking place.

One theory is that the increased use of drugs like Viagra may be producing an ‘unexpected’ side effect – a demand for more loving from their female counterparts probably.

Researchers believe that the sharp rise in the number of STDs within this age group come from the fact that 80 per cent of men aged 50-90 claim to be regularly getting down and dirty. Researchers say that this shows older men are not taking the proper precautions when it comes to avoiding infection.

Maybe it is time someone sat them down and explained to them about the birds and the bees because clearly they’re after forgetting.

The study recommends that GPs be more proactive in talking about safe sex practices with men who come into their office looking for drugs that will, ahem, help them perform. Doctors should also be aware that older patients can actually contract STDs and that they’re not all living lives free from the occasional horizontal tango.

You’d think that at their age they’d know all about being safe. Maybe it’s time for the kids in the 20-40 age bracket to start re-educating the adults.
