As we edge closer to Christams, our two JOE readers have completed six weeks of the Weight Watchers Diary. Here is this week’s latest update.
Name: Peter Cooney
Meeting: Thomas Davis GAA Club, Tallaght
Starting weight: 13 stone 13.5lbs
Current weight: 12 stone 11.5lbs
Like Jagger in ’69 after Brian Jones’ dismissal, I am also a stone down. Tasked last week with losing the pound and a half that would get me to the stone, I outdone myself and lost four. I was gobsmacked when I stood on the scales and my weight loss was revealed. Since I have begun this adventure, I have lost a stone and two pounds, far exceeding my expectations.
My week followed the same plan as all the others; being absolutely fantastic until the weekend. Once the weekend hits, our relationship status changes to ‘It’s complicated’. Weight Watchers and I get along so well on the weekdays, but once we see a Friday evening on the horizon, tension creeps in. I tend to go out with the lads whilst she watches her Gillian McKeith boxset.
It’s only on a Monday morning that I return, tail between my legs. She, waiting lovingly, fed up with watching Gillian McKeith look at people’s shi*. Our relationship blooms once again and we can be seen staring lovingly into each others eyes as we skip down Weight Loss Avenue.
I think what I’m trying to say here is that weekends are quite difficult, but with the mindset that I have devloped, Weight Watchers is never far from my mind.

Fighting off admirers has been my buiggest challenge
The Weight Watchers ProPoints programme just works for me. The results cannot be argued with and if you do try, you will lose, because you cannot win the argument because the results speak for themselves, so theres no real arguement. Tracking what I’m eating and budgeting my daily ProPoints has enabled me to become increasingly knowledgeable about what I eat and my eating habits.
It’s not that I have even gone wild with the changes. They have all been relatively minor and fit seamlessly into my rockstar lifestyle. Simple substitutions such as giving the hook (thanks Brian Kerr) to fried rice and replacing it with boiled when I’m dining the ladies (lady, shes very lucky), not overdoing portion sizes and trying to keep track and budgeting my points for when I’m heading out. It’s the small changes that really make the difference.
Over the past six weeks or so, I have enjoyed the healthier eating and have become more imaginative with my cooking and lunch preparation. Im making sandwiches that I would never have dreamed of before and dinners that are high in filling and healthy foods.
With Christmas on Tuesday, I’m prepared! Our class leader Geraldine has given us some days off, but I don’t think I’ll need them. I enjoy challenges and want to bash down the massive floydesque wall that this Christmas challenge has cemented in front of me. I’ll do it. I bloody will. Anyways, have a good christmas y’all, because remember Christmas is awesome.
Name: Roger Wheeler
Meeting: Castle Arch Hotel, Trim
Starting weight: 15 stone 7.5lbs
Current weight: 14 stone 9lbs
Another week down and although it’s not the success story of the big mile stone weight loss I would like to be reporting, it is another week with a minor weight loss. I’m down half a pound this week but on the bright side it’s better than being up in weight.
It was another tough week and with the cold conditions I still didn't manage to motivate myself to get back out on the roads. I did however manage to get myself to the gym for an hour one of the nights. I reckon it was this one night that might have done enough to get that half pound off.
Meal times this week were brought to me by the letters W and W. The new cook book from Weight Watchers was used 90 per cent of the time with the help of my wife. There was loads of experimenting done from potato, leek and celery soup to steak and mushroom tagliatelle. This was a very filling meal and was moderate in the ProPoints values.
The soup was so tasty my one year old nephew made light work of a bowl of it. I’m really looking forward to trying a few more recipes out of the book.

Roger edging edging closer to his mile-stone
Next week I will have my final meeting of the year. I am so determined to lose a stone that I'm willing to endure the gym for more than just the one hour I managed to squeeze in this week.
I hope that after the Christmas I won’t put the weight back on again. It’s been a tough battle to lose the 12 pounds to date but I can honestly say it’s been well worth it.
With the party season about to kick off I know myself it will be very difficult to stay on track and the temptation of the extra pint when you’re out or indulging in a mince pie at lunch will be high. It will be easy to just brush it off and say ‘Ah, sure it’s Christmas’.
I will need to be ruthless and learn to say no. Everything in moderation is a great mantra to go by. Our class leader Jenny also gave some great advice for over the Christmas by advising us to enjoy ourselves but to keep in mind the ProPoints values in the different foods.
Jenny is going to email us a list of festive favourites with the ProPoints values in them, so that when you are scoffing that tin of Roses you can keep in mind how many ProPoints are being wasted.
In conclusion I am going to make a huge push now to get the full stone off before the end of the year!

Here’s how much water you should drink every day, depending on your age
There’s also one way to find out if you’re dehydrated That we need to drink more water on the regular is a well-known fact. While we might consume enough liquids during the day, coffee, tea, soft drinks and a few pints after work don’t quite cut it. But why do we need to make sure […]
