Layers impressed with Rubi but Riverside takes over as Ryanair favourite

20/02/2012 1:00 pm

Rubi Light and Riverside Theatre both caught the eye of the bookmakers following victories in their respective Ryanair Chase trials at the weekend.

The mount of Andrew Lynch, Rubi Light came home 16 lengths clear of Grand National hopeful Chicago Grey in the 2m4f contest, with Apt Approach a further six lengths adrift in third.

The victory prompted several bookmakers to cut his price for the Ryanair at Prestbury Park on Thursday 15 March, a race in which he was a three-lengths third behind Albertas Run and Kalahari King last year.

Totesport, Ladbrokes and Betfred cut his price from 7/1 to 5/1 following the result, with Boylesports also trimming him to 5/1 from 6/1.

Paddy Power left him unchanged at 5/1 for the race, but alone among the bookmakers, Sky Bet weren’t hugely impressed – or rather were more impressed with Riverside Theatre, perhaps – easing Rubi Light out to 11/2 from 5/1.

If you fancy him, Robbie Hennessy’s French-bred seven-year-old is still available at 6/1 with Victor Chandler, Coral and William Hill.

The race offers a solid chance of Irish Grade 1 Cheltenham success with the Paul Nolan-trained Noble Prince also well fancied.

However, Riverside Theatre, also a winner at the weekend on his return to action for the first time in 12 months, is now the favourite virtually across the board after holding off the challenge of Medermit to win the Ascot Chase.

Nicky Henderson’s gelding was available at double-figure prices on Friday but is now as short as 4/1 favourite (Boylesports, Ladbrokes, Stan James).

Ladbrokes take a different view, though, with Riverside Theatre still available at 7/1 with them.

Sure tisn’t it all about opinions?
