Thursday's Clonmel preview, Tote info and 60-second selections
Tony Martin’s four-year-old maiden hurdler Edeymi is one of the notable attractions on show in a seven-race card at Clonmel this afternoon.
Edeymi, in the ownership of the powerful Gigginstown House Stud operation, has caught the eye of the handicapper during three winless runs in maiden hurdles, which included third place finishes to One Cool Shabra at Gowran Park in December and behind Darroun at Leopardstown last month.
Ruby Walsh takes the ride on the four-year-old, who goes up against older opposition in the Clonmel Maiden Hurdle which gets the day’s action under way at 2.05, but Dessie Hughes's Chasing Shadows could give him plenty to do.
The richest event on the day is the Lisronagh Novice Handicap Chase at 4.10, with €10,000 on offer for the winner.
Christy Roche’s Code of the West, winner of a handicap chase at Down Royal a fortnight ago, has been installed as the favourite but has to overcome a six-pound rise in the weights if he’s to make it back-to-back wins.
Top weight Prince of Milan has posted a couple of encouraging runs in handicap company since winning a novice chase over the course and distance in October and he could be worth a look.
The smallest field on the day could be the one with the most pointers for the future, with a number of nice prospects facing the starter in the Porterstown Steeplechase over two miles at 2.35.
The quintet includes two from the all-powerful Willie Mullins yard, Listed hurdle winner Bishopsfurze and French import Tango Banbou, making his debut for Mullins today, while the Dessie Hughes-trained Action Master, a winner on the Flat as well as over hurdles and fences, also has the look of one with a solid chance.
In Tote information, there’s a Jackpot rollover of €2,910 into the €5,000 Guarantee, which should ensure a decent overall pool, while for the more ambitious among you the Pick 6 has a rollover of €7,050.50. (For more info on the Pick 6, check this out, while novice Jackpot punters can have a look at this if they're thinking of going for the jugular in Races 3-6.)
