Fixing a new knob to an old door can really help with bringing it back to life and it’s cheaper than getting a brand new door, which is always a plus.
All you have to do to turn that old door into a new one is to give it a lick of paint and a new door handle, so here’s how to fix a new knob to the door in five minutes.
What you’ll need:
New handle
Screws
Power drill
Screwdriver
Safety goggles… just in case
Step 1: Remove the handle
To stick on a new door handle you’ll have to remove the old one first. Remove the screws that are currently holding the handle in place. You should find them on the inside-side of the door (it would be a bit silly to put them on the outside now wouldn’t it?).
If you have one of those awkward round door handles that has no screws holding it in place then look for a small slot on the underside of the knob, like in the image below. Insert a pin into this small slot and the knob should release from the door.
Step 2: Remove the back plate
To remove the back plate from the door, simply look for a slot in the plate along the seam where it sits against the door and then wedge a flathead screwdriver in to pop it off. Simples.
Step 3: Remove the latch
Now that the back plate is off you can remove the old screws and latch in the door. This can be done using a power drill and a screwdriver bit. Just be careful not to take chunks out of the door when you’re doing this.
Step 4: Fix the new handle to the door
Once the old latch is out you can begin on fitting the new one. Make sure the holes of the new back plate line up with the old ones. If not, drill new ones into the door but be careful when lining them up.
Fix the new latch to the door and set the screws by hand first, then with the power drill. Then fix the new handle to the door but make sure not to over tighten it as this could warp your hard work.
Give it check by locking and unlocking the door. Once the door reopens, you know your job is a good one.
