Asking the big questions

John McNamara - Life Coach

In this week's piece from JOE's Life Coach John McNamara, he asks us to leave our comfort zone - by the simple act of questioning.

I want to take you back in time for just a few moments. Imagine yourself at ten years of age - the world was your oyster and you had a head full of hopes and dreams. Fear, worry, inertia or any other BS never crossed your mind. So fast forward again to your life today. Do you believe you are doing justice to yourself and the person and life you imagined you would have by now?

Have you achieved all that you would have hoped for, do you have the financial security you would have wished for, the partner, career or social circle and inner happiness you would have imagined all those years back? There are many definitions for Hell on Earth, but one I particularly like for this dilemma is:

“To meet the person you could have been”

The good news

It’s not too late. However it is time to get honest with yourself and start asking yourself the BIG QUESTIONS. Yes, the ones you avoid, the ones that will challenge you, make you think, make you feel a little uncomfortable and shake you out of that comfortable rut you have gotten into. As a coach this is a huge part of what I do and part of the real value of having a coach. If you’re happy in your mediocrity then you can stop reading now and move along with your day. If you're not, here are a few of the BIG QUESTIONS to ask yourself to start this process;

•             If I had no fear what would I do with my life?

•             If nothing changes in my life in the next five years, how will I feel in November 2016?

•             What would I want from my life if I knew I could have it any way I wanted?

•             Where am I weak?

•             What am I willing to sacrifice to get the life I desire?

•             What one skill or characteristic, if acquired, would have the greatest positive impact on my life?

There is no expedient to which a man will not go to avoid the real labour of thinking - Thomas Edison

Now that should be enough to get you started. These questions are all empowering and the answers you will receive are empowering and honest. Compare these questions to the habitual and unresourceful questions that the average person runs in their internal dialogue:

•             Why does this shit always happen to me?

•             How are you expected to get a job in this city?

•             When will I ever catch a break?

And on and on they go...

Familiar? Now which set of questions do you think is going to yield you the greater results in the long run. Yeah, you bet it’s the BIG QUESTIONS that will serve you best. It is time to get honest with yourself and have a little bravery.

In "The Alchemist", which I believe to be the greatest book ever written, Paulo Coelho eloquently addresses what he calls the World’s Greatest Lie.

"It’s this; that at a certain point in our lives we lose control of what’s happening to us, and our lives become controlled by fate. That’s the world's greatest lie."

So what’s it going to be for you? If you’re sick of doing the same ol' things and getting the same ol' results it's time to start taking control of your life.
