Booze Myths Uncovered, No.7: Hair of the Dog
So you think that having another pint after a heavy night out will cure that pounding hangover? Well, we've got news for you buddy, so listen up...
Most of us have experienced the gruelling affects of a hangover. If you haven’t, then you’re probably a Pioneer or you’re some kind of freakish super human. As for the rest of us, there’s nothing worse then waking up with The Fear (cue spooky music).
Some of you may have tried to quell the shakes and that banging headache with another glass of whatever it was that you were drinking last night. For some of you, that might help for a minute or two, but we bet you didn’t know that you’re actually just prolonging the torture.
You might be a little bit less shaky after forcing down a pint in the morning, but at the end of the day, you’re just putting more alcohol into your already overloaded system. That means your liver has to deal with even more toxins, just when it thought it was getting a break. And do you really want to be smelling like alcohol first thing in the morning – more so than you already do?
When it comes down to it lads, the only thing that will shift the DTs (Delirium tremens - Latin for 'shaking frenzy') is time, and only time. It takes your body roughly one hour to get rid of one standard drink - that's half a pint, or a small glass of wine or a shot. So unless you can speed up time, you’re just going to have to wait it out.
So put down the pint of larger and pick up a pint of water, because after a night out your body will be dying for some good old fashion H2O.
