You will never hear the experience of shopping in two of the world’s most well-known supermarket chains described as eloquently as it was by Mick McConnell in Listowel recently. Brilliant.

Anyone who has shopped or regularly shops in Lidl or Aldi will know that you could go there for a pint of milk and a loaf of bread and end up bringing home the groceries, a set of goalposts for the back garden, a container of oil for the car and a flat-pack barbeque for when the weather is fine outside. That might sound odd to anyone who’s never been there but when the fruit and veg and camping gear are located in the same aisle it can be hard to avoid in fairness. And it’s great. Our attempts to explain just what it is like to shop in either supermarket chain pale in comparison to the brilliant ballad composed by singer/songwriter Mick McConnell and sung in John B. Keane’s pub in Listowel in Kerry recently and while we might be a little late to the party with it we still thought it worth bringing to your attention. Like all great songs, it features a chorus that everyone can sing along to but for us, the real beauty is in some of the genius lines contained within the verses about the products one can expect to pick up in a single trip.
