Space Cadets: Tom Cruise
In Space Cadets we look at some of the world’s most…ahem, unique celebrities and there’s only one person we could really start this off with; the great Tom Cruise.
Tom Cruise has been a massive Hollywood star since he burst on to the screens with Risky Business, which gave us an absolutely classic scene with him sliding across the floor, which has been imitated hundreds of times since by anyone who ever had a free gaff when they were younger.
Since then, Cruise has pretty much been an A-list star, and one of the highest paid actors in film. Even with the paparazzi keeping a close eye on him for us, we’ve only had a glimpse into the strange world of Tom, but what we do know is a little out there.
Cruise is perhaps best known for being an outspoken advocate for the Church of Scientology, after first getting involved by heading to one of their famous “celebrity centres”.
Since then, Cruise has become more and more involved in the religion, and has become perhaps their most high profile member. On the Today Show he conducted quite an odd interview about prescription drugs where he told host Matt Lauer, and the nation, that “you don’t know, and I do”.
In another infamous moment, Cruise talked about how privileged he feels to be a Scientologist for a promotion video for the Church, and came out with some absolute gems. The highlight was, of course when he said “being a scientologist, when you drive past an accident, it’s not like anyone else because when you drive past, you know you have to do something about it because you know you’re the only one that can really help”.
Then of course, there was his infamous performance on Oprah where he announced he as in love with his now ex-wife Katie Holmes. The video shows just the highlights of his… interesting behaviour during that interview, which included jumping on the couch, awkward hugs and a version of Tebowing before it was actually known as Tebowing. Maybe Tim ripped off Tom?
