Wayne Rooney has barely been out of the headlines all year, mostly for the wrong reasons, so his venture into the world of Twitter should be fun.

Although not yet verified by the site itself, the account 'Wazzaroon08' apparently belongs to the Manchester United striker and has recieved over 160,000 followers in just over 24 hours. Those aren't figures that will cause Charlie Sheen too much worry, but they're impressive nonetheless.

Rio Ferdinand (who has over 830,000 followers) was first to break the news, tweeting:

'Wayne Rooney is entering the twitterverse tweeps!! Its @Wazzaroon08 !!'

Rooney's tweets have been surprisingly low-key thus far, with the player misunderstanding how to reply to certain users (Ferdinand for example), cheering on Celtic in the Old Firm derby ('Come on Celtic get a win today and win league. Come on the hoops') and rejoicing at Bolton's first goal against Arsenal yesterday ('Goooaaaaalll sturridge is on fire'). United fans will also be pleased to hear that Rooney has described Javier Hernandez as the 'buy of the century'.

It's early days for Rooney's account - so early that he doesn't have an actual photo and is an 'egg' instead - but we have every hope that the next Twitter controversy may spring from it's latest celebrity follower. Even if it doesn't, Rooney's tweets are already a lot more entertaining than Rio Ferdinand's cringe-worthy 'banter'.
