Olympic Spillage #19: John Joe, homecomings, Ryan Lochte beaten up and an unimpressed gymnast

11/08/2012 11:20 am

It’s the penultimate Olympic Spillage of the games and today we ask where’s best to watch John Joe Nevin go for gold, see Patrick Stewart beat up Ryan Lochte and an unimpressed US gymnast.

Where to watch John Joe go for Gold?

It’s Saturday, it’s sunny across the country and John Joe Nevin is going for gold tonight in the Men’s Bantamweight final, so time for a little housekeeping to ensure you guys know where best to be at for the fight at 20.45

Nevin was extremely impressive yesterdaybeating Cuban fighter Lazaro Alvarez Estrada and even his teammate Paddy Barnes suggested on Twitter that the Westmeath man be a contender for the coveted Val Barker trophy, awarded to the most stylish boxer at the games.  Past winners of the award include greats such as Teofilo Stevenson and Roy Jones Junior.

Nevin is guaranteed a silver at least, but extra spice has been added as he fights a British opponent in Luke Campbell.

On Thursday JOE was in Bray to see Katie Taylor make history and John Joe Nevin’s hometown is the place to be tonight to see him hopefully repeat the feat.

Around 1,500 people crowded into the Market Square in Nevin's hometown of Mullingar yesterday afternoon to watch his fight on a big screen - and they'll be out again today.

Niall Horan and the late Joe Dolan have serious competition for the title of Mullingar’s favourite son...

Hold the champagne and let them get some rest...

While we're at it, if you’re looking forward  to an Italia ’90-style homecoming for Ireland’s Olympians you may have to wait...the expected homecoming celebrations next week for Ireland's Olympic heroes have been put back.

A spokesperson for Dublin City Council says after sounding out the feelings of athletes in the Team Ireland camp they’ve decided to postpone Monday's planned celebratory events

There were plans for Ireland's Olympic heroes to parade through the streets of Dublin on an open-top bus, but the athletes want to spend some private time with their families....which is fair enough really.

There’ll still be some handwringing and backslapping event for politicians to attend though.

Patrick Stewart beats up Ryan Lochte

For a Shakespearian actor Patrick Stewart doesn’t take himself too seriously, we loved his turn playing a pervy version of himself in Ricky Gervais’s Extras and now Captain Picard is doing it again.

Check out this great video of him playing an Olympic ticket tout and meeting American Olympic swimming star Ryan Lochte, whose acting skills are just as bad as his interview skills.

American Gymnast not impressed

McKayla Maroney doesn’t look particularly winning a silver medal in the vault competition at the Olympics.

Here in Ireland we were less than impressed with Sofya Ochigava’s less than graceful demeanour after losing to Katie Taylor on Thursday.

Maroney absolutely leaves no doubt as to her humour after striking this pose that has become an internet meme:

In fairness we’ve all been there at least she didn’t start questioning the judges and belittling her opponent like Ochigava.
