Darren O'Neill flag-bearer at closing ceremony

Darren O'Neill will carry the tricolour at tomorrow’s Olympic closing ceremony.

Ahead of John Joe Nevin’s final fight for gold tonight against England’s Luke Campbell his team captain Darren O’Neill has been selected to be Ireland’s flag bearer at the closing ceremony tomorrow.

O’Neill competed in the men’s middleweight division, losing to German Stefan Hartel in the final 16, in a tough bout.

The Kilkenny man said he was disappointed not to bring back a medal but was widely praised for his continued encouragement to his teammates as the boxing squad captain.

Ireland’s boxing squad has had its best ever Olympics with four medals secured and no small part of that was due to Nevin’s encouragement on Twitter and in person as we have pointed out on JOE.

The closing ceremony takes place tomorrow at 9pm and promises to be a great show, in spite of the Spice Girls performing...
