Watcha gonna do, watcha gonna do when they come for you? Close down, according to dozens of petrol stations busted by the boys over at the Revenue Commissioners Office.

There has been a crackdown on fuel smuggling and laundering over the last year and a half and it seems it has been at least partially successful.

Revenue’s measures to curtail the multi-million Euro illegal trade has seen 44 petrol stations being closed down. Officers swooped on stations suspected of being involved in illegal activity.

Some were operating blatantly without any licence at all while others were closed for selling washed green diesel, which should only be used by farmers.

The Minister for Finance has said that new legislation will further back up the attempt to stop fuel smuggling. New finance laws will increase supervision of the fuel supply chain.

The thing is, though, it may be all a little too late as crime gangs involved in fuel laundering are already so experienced at it that they’re exporting their skills to the UK, Spain and other European countries.

Let’s hope the boys in Revenue can close down a few more petrol stations operating illegally before the fuel damages countless engines around the country.
