British driver Anthony Davidson suffered a broken back after a spectacular crash at Le Mans yesterday. Haven’t seen it yet? It’s not for the faint hearted.
The Toyota driver was attempting to lap the Ferrari of Piergiuseppe Perazzini in the Le Mans 24 hour race yesterday when he was hit by Perazzini and flung high into the air before crashing into the nearby barriers.
Perazzini too went crashing into the barriers at high speed, but it was Davidson that came off worse, suffering a broken back in the impact.
"Anthony was taken to the hospital nearby for a precautionary check here at Le Mans, which then revealed two broken vertebrae in his back," a Toyota spokesman told Sky Sports.
"He will remain in hospital here until Monday at which point we will find out more about the impact in the coming days," he added.
"The good news is that these are injuries he can recover from over a period of time and we will have to be patient and hopefully he can come back stronger than ever."
Thankfully, Davidson, who works as a Formula One analyst on Sky Sports, seemed in fairly good spirits afterwards, and tweeted to his followers: "Well that was a big one! Lying in a French hospital with a broken back wasn't what I had in mind at this stage in the race. Gutted for the Toyota Hybrid team who did an amazing job all week. Thank God I can follow the race on Twitter though!"
Given the nature of it, Davidson is probably lucky that he only suffered two broken vertebrae as a result of the crash, which you can witness for yourself in the video above.
