Video: Stunt driver's attempt to jump ramp goes horribly wrong
Rarely do you see stunt cars fail to execute their high-risk moves in public, but it can happen and it isn’t pretty when everything goes wrong.
Before you watch the video above, we can assure you that the driver in question, Finland native Toomas Heikkinen, lived to tell the tale. The 21-year old suffered a broken ankle and some abdominal pain after the accident, but as you will see in the video, it could have been a whole lot worse.
Ahead of the X Games Rallycross event in LA this weekend, Heikkinen was attempting to jump a 50-foot gap onto a metal ramp in a practise run in his Ford Fiesta rally car when he came up short and the car flipped upside down onto the ground below.
Fluids from the car caught fire moments later, but thankfully, Heikkinen had climbed from the car at that stage and after doctors gave him a thorough once over, it was revealed that a broken ankle was the worst of his injuries.
Jump practise was cancelled and Heikkinen is highly unlikely to compete in the finals this weekend, but he can be grateful that he’s still in one piece after what was a fairly spectacular crash.
Check it out for yourself in the video above.
