Mark Connolly - Premier Motor Group

In this week's motoring expert piece, Mark Connolly from Premier Motor Group advises a JOE reader on what's the best 'manly' car for a first-time buyer.

Hi Mark,

I was hoping you could help with my purchasing problem.

I’ve recently passed my driving test and I’m buying my first car. I’m 26, I play rugby and GAA and weight 15st. What’s a descent priced first car for a man of my physique? As I said, I play sports with the lads, so nothing that will get me slagged – like a Micra.

Johnny Donegan, Co Meath.

Hi Johnny
,

What about a Smart Car or even a Robin Reliant!? Just kidding, of course. I'd suggest something along the lines of a Ford Focus or VW Golf - something that’s small enough for a first car, but not small enough that the lads will give you a hard time over it.

A nice-sized hatchback will hold all your sports gear and will still be big enough to cart the lads around too. Plus, it will be a tad cheaper to run compared to a saloon or 4X4, which will be good news for a new driver who’s paying for their first insurance policy.

Driving a hatchback might also be a bit easier for a new driver. Although, having said that, you can always then move on to a saloon once you feel you’re confident enough to drive one.

To be honest, it really depends what your budget is.
